Overview of the Role

The Web Application Developer reports to the Director, Application Development. They will be a critical member of the Technology Team supporting the continued development and maintenance of Sequence Bio’s web applications.


Ideal candidate

  • 2+ years production experience developing web applications.
  • 2+ years production experience working with Ruby on Rails or similar MVC framework.
  • Programming background in Ruby, Python or similar languages.
  • Knowledge of web service APIs. You can design RESTful services and integrate with others.
  • Experience with optimization and performance tuning.
  • Knowledge of design patterns and clean coding principles.
  • Well versed in agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud infrastructure services.
  • Detail oriented with an ability to develop solutions for complex problems.
  • Passion to learn, grow and collaborate with others.
  • Team player who likes to ask and answer questions in order to draw on and expand the experience of others.
  • An appreciation for the latest technology tools, and basic proficiency with and/or willingness to learn business intelligence tools (e.g. Salesforce, Google Docs, Slack, etc.).


Responsibilities / Main business functions

  • Writing and maintaining reliable Ruby code.
  • Designing and developing new web applications.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting existing web applications.
  • Self-development of software engineering skills.
  • Working with DevOps principles and CI/CD pipeline (GitHub, CircleCI)
  • Working with databases, including working knowledge of SQL, relational data stores.
  • Contributions to improvements in operational processes, DevOps, deployment checklists, and more.
  • Ensuring web/cloud based security. We handle sensitive PHI and we make every effort to ensure it is protected by design.
  • Reporting structure is subject to change by the CEO.
  • A commitment to flexible working hours during peak project deployment is required.
  • Other duties as required by your team lead(s) or the executive team.
  • Willing to take initiative and create and take on new responsibilities as our company continues to grow.
